Since QAL acquired Mount Isa Airport in 2005, the following significant milestones have been achieved:

Growth in annual passenger movements from 108,947 in 2004 to 184,860 in 2010.
A $1.4 million investment to complete a major extension and upgrade works to the terminal building and airport entrance was completed.
Construction of two hangar facilities with capital expenditure of $1 million.
Installation of AWIS (Aerodrome Weather Information System).
Upgrade to the public car park completed.
A $13.5 million upgrade to the terminal and runway facilities was completed in 2010.
Airnorth commenced a weekly Darwin-Mount Isa-Gold Coast service in 2009.
Animal proofing of the six kilometre boundary fence.
Installation of AWIS (Aerodrome Weather Information System).
Development of a sponsorship program to support the community through funding for events such as the Mount Isa Rodeo.

The Destination

The City of Mount Isa is located 1829 kilometres from Brisbane, the Queensland State Capital and 883 kilometres from Townsville (the nearest major city).

Mount Isa City covers an area of over 43 310 square kilometres, making it geographically the second largest city in Australia to Kalgoorlie-Boulder in Western Australia. With a population of approximately 23,500, Mount Isa is a major service centre for North West Queensland, and a thriving city.

Mount Isa has a great climate with an average of 9.5 hours of sunshine a day and only 50 wet days per year. There are two distinct seasons – the wet season from November to March and the dry season centred on June, July and August. Summer months are hot, with average minimums in the low 20s (degrees Celsius) and maximums in the high 30s. Winter is much more pleasant, with average daytime temperatures in the mid-20s and nights averaging 12 degrees.

Mount Isa is growing as a tourism destination as the “heart” of Outback Australia. Key tourism attractions include the Hard Times Mine Tour, a replica of a real mine experience and the annual Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo which is the largest rodeo in the southern hemisphere.
